I had a 1:24 flight out of L and so I went with Galen to campus and sat in on his two hour class in physics, mechanics to be exact...or well, approximate any way. Not only did he spend a solid two hours lecturing on mechanics, but he then spent a full hour after class working with two or three students who had questions. When I say lecture, that is not a particularly apt description of what he does. After explaining a concept and even during the explanation, he stops and poses questions which student have two minutes to answer using clickers registered to each of them.
They are encouraged to talk with each other about the answer and then can change the answer if they think their first choice was not correct. It is not really used to evaluate students but rather to give the professor an idea of what students are thinking and how they are thinking about the problem at hand. He asks for questions and actually wants to hear them and then will answer them.
On the way home, I started to read The Quantum Enigma which covers some of the same mechanics as Galen did in the course. This was part of an historical perspective that will lead the reader into the wacky world of quantum mechanics.
We got the airport in plenty of time and I arrived home a little after midnight. It was a wonderful trip filled with the daily lives of the Huntington Beach Pickett's. I couldn't have asked for more.

Trip to Huntington Beach June - Fifth Day
Things got off to an inauspicious start when Galen's car wouldn't start. Being a physicist--I say I say a theoretical one--it was a true probabilistic experiment to see what would happen. He did, in fact, get the polarity right and the car did, in fact, start. However, when he came out after his class and office hour, it didn't. While one could argue that driving a car perhaps once a week places undue strain on a battery, that would only make sense if the battery was already beyond its design life which this one was. A visit from AAA and the purchase of a new battery fixed the problem.
As the saying goes, "A door closes; a door opens." In this case, the door that opened was the extra hour and half I spent at Bolsa Chica Reserve, a coastal wetlands and mesa in Huntington Beach. Laura is very active in the Friends of Bolsa Chica that works at reclaiming the habitat back to native plants. This work is on the mesa and I had visited that part before. I had worked my way to the point and had only begun to check out the wetlands when Galen called to tell me that he was delayed. That meant I was able to hike around most of the wetlands and was able to take some nice images of water fowl and other birds along with one fish...and it was actually serving as a meal. Take a look at the Bolsa Chica photo album.
After a very nice lunch at The Red Table, a little bistro that opened in the neighborhood shopping area, we came home, rested a bit and then went to pick up Maggie and Thomas from school. Maggie is very enthusiastic about all this as you can see in this short video.
Back home I finally got around to getting a picture of the four kids. I think they are a pretty good looking bunch but then I am appropriately biased.
After a chili dinner, Maggie and Thomas gave brief recitals: maggie on the violin and Thomas a keyboard. That was followed by Galen and Maggie assembling the telescope she received as one of her birthday presents. After Galen introduced me to Google Sky Map, we located Mars or at least where Mars would be when it got dark enough which it did in a little while. We all took a turn looking at the red planet. it was really red, almost like a tail light on a car.

After all that excitement, I needed a nap which i promptly took. Then it was off to the orthodontist for Maggie's appointment. Dr. Chang's office is quite contemporary and very pleasing visually. Coincidentally it is across the street from what used to be a very difficult golf course that my friend, Tom McFadden, suckered me into playing some years back. It is now the site of Cottonwood Church. The ground certainly needed to be consecrated after I finished with it...both physically and verbally.

Trip to Huntington Beach June - Fourth Day
Sunday was the day for my bike ride with Galen. He had identified a local bike shop whose web site said they rented road and hybrid bikes rather than the omnipresent cruisers which shops all over Hunting beach have available. We got to the shop when it opened only to learn that, in fact, they rented no bike of any kind and that this was true of any "real" bike shop. We had to re-calibrate our plans since if I was going to be on a cruiser--no gears and coaster brakes--we wouldn't be doing a long distance ride along one of the river trails. It turned out to be just fine since Maggie was up for going along. So Galen used his tandem bike and I used a cruiser. We went for 12 mile ride along the beach trail/walkway south toward the Huntington Beach Pier. Here is some video that shows what a lovely day it was.
It was a lovely ride. I didn't get any good pictures of Galen and Maggie but Galen did get this one of Maggie and me.
When we got back home and after we returned the bike, I took a shower and a nice nap. then we all piled into the van and headed to Newport Beach for the final piece of the weekend birthday celebration, dinner at a Japanese buffet. There was plenty of food of all kinds. Apparently Henry was cruising the buffet when I took this picture.
We headed back home to finish off the remainder of the ice cream birthday cake. Then Lee Alan, my nephew called. He and his family relocated this spring to Ventura area where he is stationed in the Navy. I had talked to my sister Louisa earlier in the day when I realized from Facebook that she was out visiting them and that on Saturday they spent the day at Knotts Berry Farm which is just across the street from Soak city where we spent a good part of Saturday. It also turns out that their daughter Elaine has the same birthday as the twins: same day and same year. How about that for a small world. I look forward to seeing all of them in July when we all gather for my Mom's 100th birthday celebration.

Trip to Huntington Beach June - Third Day
When I got up at my customary 5:00 am, I found Galen already up and dressed. It seemed that the girls were awake and more or less rampaging around 4:00 and so he was posted on sentry duty to at least keep them in one room! This appeared to be working and things were calm. Eventually they began to wake up as breakfast preparations began: chocolate chip pancakes with mounds of whipped cream. Marilyn will be glad to know that I passed on these and had a bowl of cereal. Sadly that was the last healthy food I had that day till a late salad around 7:30.
Galen and I left the house with Thomas and two friends, Max and Griffen, to spend the day at Soak City, a water park which is part of Knott's Berry Farm. It was a cool morning even those ten miles inland until the fog dissipated around 1:00, shortly before we left. The boys had a good time and I got to take a few little naps while lounging around the wave pool. When we entered the park, I noticed a staff member engaging in some strange behavior shown in this video. it turns out this is the life guard routine to insure that every inch of the water features is covered by observers from different angles constantly. Clearly just moving your eyes is not enough; full head movement is required. Anyway, the boys had a great time. Here is a link to video of them on Lazy River.
When we returned home, we found the makeover is full swing with Barrie, the nail artist, working on each of the girls. You can see that Maggie--along with others--got a full treatment including stars and whatnot placed on the nails.
Then it was time for birthday cake, actually two cakes. One was an ice cream cake from Dairy Queen (Thomas) and the other was an oreole cookie cheesecake from Cheesecake Factory. It was a bit of a trick getting all the candles lit at the same time and this resulted in a very quick happy birthday song. Take a look at the video of the quick Happy Birthday song.Everyone ate their fill and more. The final guest left around five and the rest of us generally collapsed. A bit of salad and then to bed looking forward to a bike ride with Galen and Maggie (on the tandem) tomorrow morning and afternoon.

Trip to Huntington Beach June - Second Day
With the three hour time difference and my early rising habit to begin with, I started out early today at 4:00 am. Galen joined me around 5:30 and we had our usual early morning visit over coffee. It is always one of the highlights of my trips to visit the kids and this one is no exception. We didn't get to physics but I still have three mornings to go. Once everyone was up or after Galen got everyone up, we went through the regular morning routine of getting everyone off to school.
Galen and I then went to the CSULB campus where he had his first formal meeting with the McNair Scholars. This is a programs funded by the U. S. Department of Education to identify and support minority students to enter doctorate programs. the program is named for Ronald McNair, an African American astronaut who was killed in Challenger. While Galen is a professor of physics, the participants are in a variety of fields. His role in this summer program is to help them understand the nature of graduate study and the process of selecting and then applying to appropriate programs. I have experienced him teaching a physics class but had never seen him in this role. For those of you that know him, it will come as no surprise that he is exceptional in both the content and the methodology. He genuinely cares about these students and the challenges they face. His method of interacting with them is wonderful to see. I was very proud of him.
As he spent the final two hours meeting with individual students, I went off to the Japanese Garden on campus to see what pictures might be there. The hydrangea were in full bloom and I couldn't resist trying some macro shots. For once I used a tripod and was able to get some nice depth of field in some of the shots. During my time there, we were visited by a blue heron who was so used to humans that it was possible to get some close shots. I returned to the McNair program area and visited with some of the students and then we left to grab some lunch in an Irish Pub in Seal Beach. Our trip home diverted to Target to pick up some birthday gifts for Maggie and Thomas whose ninth birthday is Saturday. Also I needed to get a swim suit since Galen and I are taking Thomas and two friends to Soak City - a water park - on Saturday.
We picked up Robert and Henry from school and then returned home to find the girls beginning to gather for the birthday sleepover. Eventually five of them showed up along with two friends of Thomas. After a dinner of pizza and ice cream, they were just getting started as I went off to bed around 9:00. When I got up at 5:00, I was told by Maggie that they hadn't been to sleep all night! I am not sure how they intend to make it through today without crashing.

Trip to Huntington Beach June - First Day
I took a 5:45 am flight out of Rochester and arrived in Los Angeles around 10:00 after a flawless connection in Chicago. Weather when I landed was typical: 70's blue skies and no one can remember the last time it rained. Galen picked me up and we got to the house around 11:30. After a walk to Trader Joe's for lunch fixings, I got a tour of the yard including a very impressive vegetable garden with several corn stalks that tower over us all.
We walked to the grade school to get Maggie and Thomas, the nine-year-old twins who celebrate their birthday this Saturday. It wasn't long before someone suggested a trip to Cherry-on-Top for a little treat. No, it wasn't me but I gladly went along with the idea.
Robert and Henry had gotten home just before we left. It was great to see them both. More about them and their activities later.
The weekend will be filled with activities beginning with a six girl sleepover Friday night. On Saturday Galen and I are taking Thomas and two of his friends to Soak World, a water park while Maggie has a makeover party at home. Some time this weekend, it looks like I will be taking Robert and Henry to see Prometheus, thus completing a karmic circle that began with my taking the three oldest to see Alien when it first came out.
