I had a 1:24 flight out of L and so I went with Galen to campus and sat in on his two hour class in physics, mechanics to be exact...or well, approximate any way. Not only did he spend a solid two hours lecturing on mechanics, but he then spent a full hour after class working with two or three students who had questions. When I say lecture, that is not a particularly apt description of what he does. After explaining a concept and even during the explanation, he stops and poses questions which student have two minutes to answer using clickers registered to each of them.
They are encouraged to talk with each other about the answer and then can change the answer if they think their first choice was not correct. It is not really used to evaluate students but rather to give the professor an idea of what students are thinking and how they are thinking about the problem at hand. He asks for questions and actually wants to hear them and then will answer them.
On the way home, I started to read The Quantum Enigma which covers some of the same mechanics as Galen did in the course. This was part of an historical perspective that will lead the reader into the wacky world of quantum mechanics.
We got the airport in plenty of time and I arrived home a little after midnight. It was a wonderful trip filled with the daily lives of the Huntington Beach Pickett's. I couldn't have asked for more.
